Fall-Into-Winter Forage: Keep A Great Thing Growing.

Winterize pastures this fall to extend grazing, boost protein, TDN – and lay the groundwork for a great 2018.

Louisville, KY (August 15, 2017) High-quality forage is Goal One for reducing purchased feed and supplement costs. Protein, NSCs, lipids, fiber: there’s nothing like it to supply optimal TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients)* and keep a herd in healthy weight as the weather gets colder. In other words, if you want better feed for your stock in the winter, better to feed your forage in the fall.

Monty’s recommends Hay-Now and Liquid Carbon as an optimal one-two punch. Hay-Now is a foliar-applied liquid fertilizer that blends N, P, and K with sulfur, iron, and zinc in a formula designed specifically for hay crops and pastures. It delivers readily-available nutrients to plants during the vegetative-growth stage, which fosters growth and root development.

The second punch comes as Monty’s Liquid Carbon (MLC) soil conditioner improves the soil they’re rooted in; boosting plant health by speeding residue breakdown, improving soil oxygenation, and enhancing micronutrient uptake. MLC also reduces compaction by herds and equipment, and helps repair damage done by overgrazing.

John Downey, Pulaski Warehouse owner says: “The application of Monty’s products has proven results in our market, and the application of Hay-Now and MLC this fall will definitely benefit your livestock. Your hay and pastures will have better growth, nutrient content, palatability, and protein —all the things you want in a quality forage. And faster re-growth.”

Larry Strange, Monty’s Regional Manager, says “Forage-nutrient density is critical to animal health and well-being. Adding Hay-Now and MLC to your fall program helps increase forage protein, TDN, palatability, and sugar content in late-season grasses and legumes. By feeding plants through the root tissue you create healthier plants; plants that help animals’ immune systems fight the diseases and parasites that can affect performance gains for the producer.”

And when spring comes? “Increased available nutrients and oxygen at the root systems help the forage crop come back faster and healthier. Continued use will result in better yields and more cuttings, because healthier plants make healthier forage.”

Monty’s Vice President of Agronomy Joe Dedman sums up winterization this way: “Nutrients are vital for plant energy. When you apply Hay-Now in the fall, you’re pumping more energy into the plant before it goes into dormancy. So you get more of the sugars, proteins, and nutrients great forage needs. Combine this with MLC’s ability to restore pasture soil while it rests, and plants have a bigger source of nutrients at their roots to come out faster, stronger, and last longer next season.”
