Monty’s 2015 wheat yield contest winners all produce over 100 bushels

While Monty’s Plant Food Company continues their commitment to develop the best and most innovative plant and soil solutions for growers around the world, there is always room to go farther and challenge our growers and each other.

This is what brought Monty’s Plant Food and Southern States Cooperative together to offer North Carolina wheat growers an extra incentive to utilize both companies’ products in their 2015 wheat production program.

NCSGGA LogoThe 2015 Monty’s/Southern States Wheat Yield Contest for North Carolina began in the fall of 2014 when growers selected their Southern States proprietary wheat variety and applied Monty’s Liquid Carbon within one month before or after wheat planting. Contestants also applied Monty’s Liquid Carbon with their liquid nitrogen application in the spring of 2015. The final requirement of the contest was that participating farmers enter the North Carolina Small Grain Growers 2015 Yield Contest.

“This was a really good way for us to show the significance of using Southern States wheat and Monty’s soil conditioning products together for top-producing yields,” said Ron Perry, Independent Crop Consultant for Monty’s Plant Food.

Both contests announced their winners, entitling the winners to cash prizes and overall bragging rights. All three Monty’s Plant Food and Southern States Cooperative contest winners finished in the top 20 in the statewide contest and one finished third in his region. All qualified for the 100 Bushel Wheat Club of the North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association. Robert Woodard of Perquimans County won first place with 103.26 bushels per acre and received $2,500. Matt Bell of Cleveland County took second place with 102.10 bushels per acre and received $1,750. And Robert Sanders of Alamance County yielded 100.45 bushels per acre and received $1,000.

“A grower’s objective is to give their crop the best soil conditions to germinate and thrive in throughout the year,” said Perry. “This contest showed that by starting with a high quality wheat variety from Southern States and adding Monty’s Liquid Carbon to the soil, top yielding crops can definitely be produced. Congratulations to our winners and thank you.”
