In a pair of recent articles regarding the future of farming, several Texas producers, industry insiders and agribusiness leaders from their community weighed in on what 2012 holds for growers and cattlemen in the Lone Star State. Among those quoted, our own Steven Page, a Regional Manager for Monty’s, gave his outlook.

His thoughts:

Row-croppers are taking a wait and see attitude. Last year they pulled back on any additional nutrient applications because the ground was just too dry. For the same reason, many did not plant wheat this winter. They will see how the La Nina winter and early spring goes before making any firm decisions on planting, crops, or nutrient applications.

Cattlemen, for their part, are cutting back. Herd sizes are down about 40% form peak levels in the 90’s. Much of that has been due to continued drought in the nation’s top-producing beef state. That has not been lost on Page who said in the article that he and his father hauled off the last of the elder Page’s cattle this past weekend. The bottom line, cattle producers are running out of hay and they will continue to liquidate their herds until that changes.
